How do I get my business to show up on Google Maps?

Published 17 June 2026 · 4 min read

To show up on Google Maps, you need a verified Google Business Profile. It is free, it is run by Google, and once your business is confirmed as real it can appear on Maps and in the local results that sit at the top of a search. Setting it up is step one. Filling it in properly, and earning reviews, is what actually lifts you above the other businesses nearby. Here is the plain version.

Step one: claim and verify your profile.

Search for your business name on Google. If a listing already exists, claim it. If not, create one at the Google Business Profile site. Google then checks you are genuine, usually by sending a code in the post or by phone. Until you complete that step, you will not reliably appear on Maps. This is the single most common reason a business is invisible there.

Step two: fill it in completely.

A half-finished profile rarely ranks. Add the lot: exact business name, address, phone number, opening hours, your categories, the services you offer, and a clear description. Crucially, make your name, address and phone number match your website and any other listings word for word. Google trusts businesses whose details line up everywhere, and gets uneasy when they do not.

Step three: add real photos.

Profiles with genuine photos of your premises, team and work get more clicks and calls than those without. Upload a handful of good ones and add to them now and then. It signals an active, real business, both to Google and to the person deciding whether to call you.

Step four: earn reviews, and reply to them.

Reviews are one of the strongest things you can influence. A steady flow of honest reviews, with you replying to each, tells Google you are active and trusted, and it is often what convinces a searcher to pick you over the next listing. The trick is to ask at the right moment: right after the job is done and the customer is happy. Make it easy with a direct link or a QR code.

Step five: let your website do its half.

Your Maps listing and your website pull together. A fast, well-structured site that names your services and area, and carries the same details as your profile, reinforces everything Google sees on the listing. The two compound. That groundwork is exactly what our local SEO service sets up, and it starts with the website itself, which you can read about on the web design page.

How long does it take?

Verification takes a few days. A complete profile can start appearing quite quickly after that. Climbing above established competitors builds over a few months as reviews and activity add up. Anyone promising an instant number-one spot is not being straight with you.

Common questions.

Create and verify a free Google Business Profile. Once Google confirms you are real, your business can appear on Maps. Fill the profile in fully for the best chance of showing up.

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?

Usually the profile is unverified, incomplete, or your name, address and phone do not match your website and other listings. Reviews and activity matter too.

Do reviews help my Google Maps ranking?

Yes. Genuine reviews, and your replies, are among the strongest local signals, and they convince searchers to choose you. Ask happy customers as soon as the job is done.
